How to open a Supply Chain Guru model without Guru
You have a Supply Chain Guru® model, an .sgm file, and no Guru seat to open it. Here's what the file is, the ways people open one, and what SCModeling does differently.
The file
What an .sgm file is
An .sgm file is a Supply Chain Guru model. Inside, it's a Microsoft Access database. It holds every input table (sites, customers, products, demand, costs and policies) and the output tables from the runs saved with it.
Your options
The ways people open an .sgm today
- Supply Chain Guru, through Coupa
LLamasoft made Supply Chain Guru, and Coupa acquired LLamasoft in 2020 (Coupa's announcement). If your company still has Guru licenses, Guru opens the file with everything it saved.
- Convert a copy to another platform
Some modeling platforms import Guru models into their own format. Optilogic's converter, for example, takes Supply Chain Guru models “from either a .scgm or .mdf format” and converts them to its own schema (Optilogic's help page). From then on you work in that platform's model.
- Open the original in SCModeling
SCModeling opens the .sgm file itself, in your browser, with its tables, Guru's saved results and the map. There's nothing to convert first.
How SCModeling differs
Open the model as it is, then check the answer
- No conversion. SCModeling opens the original .sgm as it is, so there's no new model to rebuild or reconcile.
- Every table. You see every input and output table, plus the results Guru saved with the model.
- The views you'd look for. The map, the network canvas, Verify, Explore and Charts all work on the model you opened.
- Your file stays with you. Your own file is read in your browser and isn't stored on our servers. When you run the optimizer, only the tables it needs are sent, with site, product and customer names replaced by codes.
- A second solve. Re-solve the model with AMOS, SCModeling's optimization engine, and compare the total with Guru's saved run. We test AMOS against Guru's own saved results.
Questions
Common questions
What is an .sgm file?
An .sgm file is a Supply Chain Guru model. Inside, it's a Microsoft Access database. It holds every input table (sites, customers, products, demand, costs and policies) and the output tables from the runs saved with it.
Can I open an .sgm file without Supply Chain Guru?
Yes. You can convert a copy into another platform's own model format, or open the original file as it is in SCModeling. SCModeling shows every input and output table and the results Guru saved with the model.
Does SCModeling convert my .sgm file?
No. It opens the original .sgm as it is, with no conversion step. Your own file is read in your browser and isn't stored on our servers.
Can SCModeling solve the model?
Yes. AMOS, the optimization engine in SCModeling, re-solves the model, so you can compare the total cost with Guru's saved run. We test AMOS against Guru's own saved results.
